Ashtanga Yoga is a more vigorous form of Hatha yoga centering around Breath. Sri K  Pattabhi Jois discovered ancient texts on yoga and through translation created the sequencing of the 6 series of Ashtanga.


Ashtanga (8 limb path) yoga utilizes Vinyasa (breath and movement) as well as Drishti (gaze), Ujjayi (breath), Bandha (locks) during the flow of sequence to allow for purification of the mind and body. Deep breathing and movement help create heat during practice, this allows you to sweat and purify the body and internal organs.

There are two types of Ashtanga Classes. Mysore Style which is self study, or a Lead Class where the Instructor takes you through the series of poses.


With either class you must first start with Sun Salutations, then it flows into the standing sequence, followed by either Pimary Series (Yoga Chikitsa), Second Series (Nadi Shodhana), Advanced A (third series), Advanced B (fourth series), Advanced C (fifth series) or Advanced D (sixth Series), and ending with the closing sequence that is made up of Back bends and inversions. The last and final pose in ashtanga is Savasana (corpse pose) the death after practice. This pose is extremely important to allow the practice to take hold in the body and bring the body back to its normal state of balance.
